Updating cross-references

Preflight will generate errors for any cross-reference that is out of date or invalid after you:

add or delete pages.
change a section's name.
amend publication page numbering.
edit paragraph text at a cross-reference's target.
remove an anchor that is a cross-reference's target.
use a Chapter Name subfield in a document whose parent book is not open on the Books panel.

Updating cross-references in books

When a document is a book chapter and contains cross-references to other book chapters, ensure the book is open on the Books panel before updating cross-references.

The Books panel's Preferences menu includes options to update cross-references: in all of the current book's chapters immediately, and when outputting (exporting or printing) books.

To update a cross-reference's value:

On the Cross-References panel:

Select one or more cross-references.
Select Update Cross-Reference.

To update all cross-references in a document:

On the Cross-References panel, select Update All Cross-References.

To update all cross-references in a book:

On the Books panel's Preferences menu, select Cross-References>Update Cross-References.
