About sampling colors

Color sampling appears in two slightly different forms within Affinity Photo. It exists as a Studio 'component' as well as a standalone tool.

Both versions function in slightly different ways:

A color picker appears in the Color Studio (and other color-related pop-up panels).
A standalone Color Picker Tool appears in the Photo Persona only.

Regardless of which you use, a sampled color is stored and applied from the swatch next to the color picker's icon in the Color Studio.

To use the Color Picker Tool:

From the Photo Persona, select Color Picker Tool.
Adjust the settings on the context toolbar. Radius lets you sample from a single point or from a color-averaging area.
Do one of the following:
- Tap to pick up any color on the page.
- Drag to select any color under a magnifier.

To use the Studio's color picker:

From the Color Studio or any pop-up panels, drag from the color picker icon to select any pixel on your page.

To apply a sampled color to an object:

To automatically apply a sampled color to an object:

Select one or more objects.
On the Color Studio, tap a color selector to set where you want to apply color.
From the Photo Persona, select the Color Picker Tool.
On the context toolbar, ensure Auto-apply is enabled.
Do one of the following, to apply to selected objects:
- Tap on a color on the page.
- Drag to select any color under a magnifier anywhere within or outside the app.
