Using undo, redo and history

Any edits you make to your document are stored in the History Studio. You can then use this, or perform a gesture to undo. You can also redo an edit which you have recently undone again using a gesture.

Using the History Studio, if you undo back to a step in history and you continue editing from that step you can reinstate your redo history that would otherwise be lost. This might be because you changed your mind or if you made an edit that accidentally removed your redo history. Two branches in the history are created:

a visible new branch containing any new edits.
a hidden branch (viewable via a Cycle future icon) storing the redo history.

By default, your document's history is always saved along with the document only as long as the document remains open, but you can optionally save the document history with a copy of the document for future editing sessions; earlier edits can then be returned to even if the document is closed and reopened.

To undo or redo a change:

Do one of the following:

Two-finger tap on the document to undo your last change. Three-finger tap to redo the last change you undid.
In the History Studio, tap one of the entries in the list to jump to that state.
In the History Studio, drag the slider left to undo a change, right to redo a change.
Swipe up on the History Studio icon to undo a change, swipe down to redo a change.

To return the document to its earliest possible state:

In the History Studio, drag the slider to the farthest position to the left.

To reinstate your redo history:

Tap Cycle future at the history step where you want to reinstate your original redo history. This history is hidden 'within' the icon, and will be reinstated on tapping.

To save history with a copy of the document (cross-session):

From the Document Menu, select Save a Copy.
Enable Save history.

To set the History Studio preferences:

From Affinity Photo's Home screen, tap Preferences.
Select the General tab, then swipe the Undo Limit setting to the left to reduce the number of stored changes, right to increase the number of stored changes.
