About sampling colours

Colour sampling appears in two slightly different forms within Affinity Photo. It exists as a Studio 'component' as well as a standalone tool.

Both versions function in slightly different ways:

A colour picker appears in the Colour Studio (and other colour-related pop-up panels).
A standalone Colour Picker Tool appears in the Photo Persona only.

Regardless of which you use, a sampled colour is stored and applied from the swatch next to the colour picker's icon in the Colour Studio.

To use the Colour Picker Tool:

From the Photo Persona, select Colour Picker Tool.
Adjust the settings on the context toolbar. Radius lets you sample from a single point or from a colour-averaging area.
Do one of the following:
- Tap to pick up any colour on the page.
- Drag to select any colour under a magnifier.

To use the Studio's colour picker:

From the Colour Studio or any pop-up panels, drag from the colour picker icon to select any pixel on your page.

To apply a sampled colour to an object:

Select one or more objects.
On the Colour Studio, tap a colour selector to set where you want to apply colour.
Tap the swatch next to the colour picker icon.

To automatically apply a sampled colour to an object:

Select one or more objects.
On the Colour Studio, tap a colour selector to set where you want to apply colour.
From the Photo Persona, select the Colour Picker Tool.
On the context toolbar, ensure Auto-apply is enabled.
Do one of the following, to apply to selected objects:
- Tap on a colour on the page.
- Drag to select any colour under a magnifier anywhere within or outside the app.
