Shadows / Highlights

The Shadows / Highlights filter allows for stronger manipulation of the shadow and highlight tonal regions in an image. It can be used to reduce contrast, boost shadow detail and recover highlight detail.

About the Shadows / Highlights filter

This filter can be applied as a non-destructive, live filter.

Settings

The following settings can be adjusted on the vertical sliders:

Shadows—control how much shadow detail is boosted.
Range—specify the tonal range to boost. Increase the value to boost a greater range of shadow tones.
Range—sets the tonal threshold for recovering highlight detail. Increase the value to boost a greater range of highlights.
Highlights—control how much highlight detail is recovered.

The following settings can be adjusted on the context toolbar:

Version
- Default—The improved version of this filter, introduced in version 1.7. Recommended for more natural-looking results.
- 1.6—The classic version of this filter, retained for backwards compatibility with existing documents.
Split—enables the Before and After view. When toggled, it presents filter application side by side.
Apply—applies changes made.
Cancel—cancels changes made.
