Sampling (or picking) colors

The act of color picking lets you sample colors on the page, and then use them throughout your design.

Sampling the plane's fuselage color for use on the accompanying text.

About sampling colors

Color sampling appears in two slightly different forms within Affinity Designer.

A color picker appears as a component in the Color Studio.
A dedicated Color Picker Tool appears in your toolset; this offers color averaging, layer-specific pickup and automatic application to the currently selected object.

Regardless of which you use, a sampled color is stored and applied from the swatch next to the color picker's icon on the Color Studio.

To use the Color Picker Tool:

From the Designer Persona or Pixel Persona, select the Color Picker Tool.
Adjust the settings on the context toolbar. Do one of the following:
- (For on-page sampling) Tap to pick up any color on the page.
- (For screen-wide 'magnified' sampling) Drag the tool icon onto the pixel or area on the page you wish to sample. Use the offset magnifier to more accurately target colors.

To use a color picker:

From the Color Studio, drag from the color picker icon to select any pixel on your screen.

To apply a sampled color to an object:

Select one or more objects.
On the Color Studio, tap the selector (e.g. Fill or Stroke) to which you want to apply the color.
Tap the swatch next to the color picker icon on the Studio.

To automatically apply a sampled color to an object:

Select one or more objects.
On the Color Studio, tap the selector (e.g. Fill or Stroke) to which you want to apply the color.
From the Designer Persona or Pixel Persona, select the Color Picker Tool.
On the context toolbar, ensure Auto-apply is selected.
Do one of the following, to apply to selected objects:
- Tap a color on the page.
- Drag to select any color under a magnifier anywhere within the app.
