Sampling (or picking) colours

The act of colour picking lets you sample colours on the page, and then use them throughout your design.

About sampling colours

Colour sampling appears in two slightly different forms within Affinity Designer.

Regardless of which you use, a sampled colour is stored and applied from the swatch next to the colour picker's icon on the Colour Studio.

Designer Persona Pixel Persona Colour Picker Tool To use the Colour Picker Tool:
  1. From the Designer Persona or Pixel Persona, select the Colour Picker Tool.
  2. Adjust the settings on the context toolbar. Do one of the following:
    • (For on-page sampling) Tap to pick up any colour on the page.
    • (For screen-wide 'magnified' sampling) Drag the tool icon onto the pixel or area on the page you wish to sample. Use the offset magnifier to more accurately target colours.

To apply a sampled colour to an object:
  1. Select one or more objects.
  2. On the Colour Studio, tap the selector (e.g. Fill or Stroke) to which you want to apply the colour.
  3. Tap the swatch next to the colour picker icon on the Studio.
Colour Picker Tool To automatically apply a sampled colour to an object:
  1. Select one or more objects.
  2. On the Colour Studio, tap the selector (e.g. Fill or Stroke) to which you want to apply the colour.
  3. From the Designer Persona or Pixel Persona, select the Colour Picker Tool.
  4. On the context toolbar, ensure Auto-apply is selected.
  5. Do one of the following, to apply to selected objects:
    • Tap a colour on the page.
    • Drag to select any colour under a magnifier anywhere within the app.
